Neither the Nats or O’s are looking like contenders right now, but local baseball fans are still overjoyed, as earlier this month they learned that, finally, they can turn on their televisions and watch their teams play without a special cable package.

Mid-Atlantic Sports Network, or MASN, announced in mid-April that they are debuting a direct-to-consumer streaming option that stands alone from any other television plan requirement, called MASN+.

What makes this a big deal? Prior to this option, baseball fans in the area could only watch their teams play if they subscribed to a cable package that included MASN, alienating the nearly half of Americans who no longer use traditional cable.

Additionally, the games were “blacked out” on the MLB app, meaning that fans who paid the league directly for their exclusive streaming service could watch every team except the Nats and O’s, whether they played home or away.

Now, for $19.99 a month, or $89.99 for the last five months or regular season baseball, anyone with a device can watch the Orioles, Nationals and their pre- and postgame shows, as well as airings of classic games and other programs.

The move was announced during a series between the two regional rivals, with each having more than 80% of their games left to play.

To purchase MASN+, you can go to MASNSports.com. Owned by Orioles and Nationals, MASN has been broadcasting games for the two teams since the Nationals’ inaugural season in 2005.
