The Elijah E. Cummings Courthouse (formerly Courthouse East) on Calvert Street is shown here during its construction in 1931.
The six-storied steel, concrete and limestone building was constructed over an entire city block next to Baltimore’s City Hall, seen in the background.
Opened in 1932, the building served as both a federal courthouse and a U.S. post office.
The post office moved to Front Street in 1972 and the federal courts moved to Lombard Street just four years later.
Today the building is part of Baltimore’s Circuit Court system and houses a small post office.
