Given the fact that it treats tens of thousands of patients per year, it’s no wonder that the Greater Baltimore Medical Center comes highly recommended from many Baltimore residents. This year, GBMC boasts four Best of Baltimore awards: the Best Vein Clinic for The Vein Center at GBMC, Best Hospital to Have a Baby, Best Hospital/ER, and Best OBGYN, with Dr. Kimberly O’Rourke being recognized with the latter.
While GBMC provides services in hundreds of different medical fields, it is often recognized for its pregnancy and infant care services. One of GBMC’s founding hospitals, The Hospital for the Women of Maryland of Baltimore City, focused primarily on women’s health during a time when it was common for women to be treated at home instead of going to a hospital.
“This foundation has allowed GBMC to maintain a stellar reputation in labor and delivery, where we’ve constantly been recognized as one of the best places to have a baby in Maryland, as well as [for] other specialty areas such as surgical care and oncology services,” explains John Chessare, president and CEO of GBMC.
GBMC is also part of a statewide collaboration studying how to improve maternal health for new and expecting mothers, addressing the welfare gap that often occurs between mothers of different races and economic backgrounds.
The hospital is continuing to grow, adding more services and expanding its campus. GBMC recently saw the opening of the Louis and Phyllis Friedman Building, a new inpatient facility; and the development of the Sandra R. Berman Pavillion, which will house the Sandra and Malcolm Berman Cancer Institute at GBMC. Chessare notes that while
the extra space provided by these new projects is beneficial, they were ultimately undertaken to provide better care to patients.
