New on downtown’s west side (and just across the street from the Hippodrome) is Alewife, located in the grand old bank building formerly occupied by Lucy’s Irish Pub and Maggie Moore’s. The soaring, handsome two-level space features crimson walls, dark-stained woodwork and tile floors. It’s a beer hall atmosphere and it has the ales to live up to its name: 40 taps and more than 100 types of bottled beers are on offer. Owner Daniel Lanigan has put together a hearty menu of fare that includes the Smoke Burger (local beef, smoked gouda, gruyere, apple wood-smoked bacon and caramelized Cipollini onion, served with duck fat fries), braised oxtail, beer-braised venison sausage and fun bar food like chicken lollipops and shrimp sliders. Open seven days a week. 21 N. Eutaw St., 410-545-5112
