Caribbean Queen

_dsc5406There’s a new game in town for food from the Caribbean. Sajhoma, which opened at the end of February, is bringing Dominican flavor to Fleet Street in Fells Point. The restaurant is owned by Rodolfo and Erica Rodriguez, who, when visiting a relative in Baltimore from Brooklyn (where Erica’s father owns a restaurant), saw an opening for the Dominican-brand Caribbean of Sajhoma. “Everyone used to tell us to open a restaurant here,” Erica says.

The 37-seat spot’s popular specialty? Mofongo, a dish of molded, fried, mashed plantains, which is served in different varieties—Spanish sausage, cheese, chicken or shrimp, for instance. And with can’t-lose daily specials ($5 for a soda, choice of meat, rice and beans or green salad), this should become a new favorite for any fan of Caribbean food. The chef’s addictive secret? “Everyone says it’s the seasoning that we put into the food,” says Erica Rodriguez. “They love the seasoning.”
