As John Galliano once said, “the joy of dressing is an art.” Fashion creates art; art creates fashion. The cycle never ceases. So, when seeking something local to inspire spring wardrobes, there’s no place better to begin than the Baltimore Museum of Art.
Perhaps the BMA’s most famous asset is its collection of works by celebrated French artist Henri Matisse. Matisse was known for his deep love of color: “Colors have a beauty of their own,” he said, “which must be preserved as one strives to preserve pure tones in music.”
Keeping Matisse’s words in mind, one particular BMA painting pops out: Ballet Dancer Seated on a Stool. The piece depicts a young dancer, dressed in bright pink tights, a white tutu and pale green blouse, gazing serenely into the distance. The young lady’s delicate-yet-bold ensemble embodies a perfectly romantic spring look. Of course, we can’t be expected to don full-on tutus and pointe shoes.
