Purls of Wisdom

sept15-Covet-PurlsofWisdomWhen you think of a handcrafted knit by your great-aunt Jean, you may envision a pair of missized mittens or an uneven scarf, not a haute handbag that’s an international bestseller. Coming from a long line of knitters, Sarah Oliver began crafting chic Peruvian wool handbags for friends, family and trunk shows. Because word travels fast, especially in cute clutch form, the designerrealized she needed to hire a team, but not just any team—a group of speedy knitters who would still put love and attention into every bag. So she hired grandma! Not hers, but a group of great gals (and one lucky guy) called the Purlettes (think “knit one, purl two”) who handcraft classic crossbodies, modern satchels and more from the Redwood Senior Community in Northern California. Each bag comes with a card telling the story of the Purlette who made it—their average age is 88—and a stylish (changeable) brooch, like the gold “O” seen above or a sparkly starfish. See all the great styles, colors and adornments at The Little Shoebox in Ruxton. (We love the black evening bag with tortoise shell handles.) Prices, $150-$470. 7625 Bellona Ave., 410-825-3191. thelittleshoeboxonline.com —KAY WICKER
