As a Baltimore publication, we’d be remiss if we didn’t take the time to announce the biggest piece of beer news to come down the Patapsco in quite some time: Natty Boh has a new beer.
And it’s not just any beer. It’s a crab beer, or rather a beer meant to be enjoyed with crabs: Crab Shack Shandy, a golden lager infused with citrus and “a hint of lemon zest and orange peel.” As the brand was very clear to point out, it doesn’t actually contain “crab spice” (a.k.a. Old Bay), but it’s meant to complement the taste of a good ol’ Maryland crab feast.
Why debut a new beer now, after more than 30 years? Boh brand manager C-Mo Molloy says it’s a healthy mix of customer satisfaction and keeping up with the Joneses.
“The beer market is such a different place than it was 30 years ago,” he says. “Back then, customers were tried-and-true and had one product that they basically stuck to. They were brand loyal. Today’s consumer has so many options available to them that now seemed like a good time to put ourselves out there in terms of innovation.”
But don’t expect another big announcement anytime soon.
“Our biggest concern right now is making sure we get Crab Shack Shandy out there,” Molloy says. “It would be easy to throw a bunch of stuff to the wall to see if it sticks, but I don’t think that would be true to who we are.”
So there you have it, folks. Don’t know about you, but we’ll be fighting off our frustrations that it’s still (!) snowing with a Crab Shack Shandy ASAP.
