In a Minor Key

Before Manny Machado, Chris Tillman and Jonathan Schoop became stars with the Orioles, they honed their baseball skills in the team’s minor league system, including fruitful stints with the Bowie Baysox, Baltimore’s affiliate in the Eastern League. The “minors” brim with the same drama, hope and heartbreak found at the major league level, only in a more intimate setting—in the case of the Baysox, the comfy confines of Prince George’s Stadium. Fans can see promising young players, veteran Orioles rehabbing from injuries and a bevy of talented (but not destined for prime time) career minor leaguers. Occasionally, everything gels, as in 2015, when the Baysox, whose roster then included top Orioles prospect Trey Mancini, won the Eastern League championship. “Get your Orioles fix when the O’s are on the road,” advises Baysox General Manager Brian Shallcross. “It is an easy trip down to our ballpark with ample free parking close the stadium. Grab a free program. Sit close to the field. Take a ride on the carousel. Let your kids run the bases after the game.” A carousel! The team plays the first of this season’s 70 home games on April 13.
