When Craig Curbean and Dante Davis took on their first catering gig, they served pulled pork and pit beef, ham, salads, homemade bread, an array of desserts and alcohol. The tough experience—they were faced with non-functioning stoves—prompted the duo to find their own kitchen, and they opened the carryout-only Taste This (4915 Harford Rd.) in Hamilton. In November, they opened a sit-down Taste This on 25th Street near St. Paul, a spot that straddles Station North and Charles Village, not too far from the Baltimore City Schools headquarters—ensuring the partners a varied clientele. Curbean, who graduated from Baltimore International College in 2009 and worked in the kitchens of Shepherd Pratt, has long dreamed of his own place. He and Davis keep things comfy with spiced chicken (their specialty) with Cajun cream sauce, platters of grilled salmon, barbecued ribs and smothered pork chops. Davis, who previously worked at Jay’s Deli, eschews the term “chef”—“I’ve been home cooking my whole life,” he says. At Taste This, Davis recreates many of the Southern-style recipes he learned from his grandmother. Taste This is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. 102 E. 25th St., (443) 563-2845
