On a tiny side street off Cross Street in Federal Hill, Abbey Burger Bistro has opened on the site of the former Sky Lounge. A thorough renovation has yielded a more spacious first floor, up-to-date restrooms and a new bar area upstairs. Additional windows have been installed, walls uncovered to expose the bricks and the bar refinished in dark wood tones. As the name suggests, the kitchen’s emphasis is on burgers— Black Angus bison, turkey, chicken, veggies, foie gras, lamb, portobello mushroom— take your pick. With the simple order sheets provided (similar to ordering sushi) you then select what type of bread or bun, degree of doneness, and fresh toppings and condiments for your self-designed burger. There’s also a small roster of salads and appetizers to accompany your meal. There’s a modest wine list and a selection of 60 or so types of beer, from domestics to imports to microbrews. The men behind it are former Ryleigh’s Oyster manager Russell Miller and chef Chris Patternotte, formerly of VIN in Towson. (1041 Marshall St., 443-453-9698)
