It’s no great surprise that real estate agent/floral designer Jake Boone “loves a good party,” says longtime friend and fellow flower guru Barbara Taylor. But the surprise was on Boone on Feb. 24 when he walked into his Bolton Hill home to find 60 of his friends and family decked out in costumes, shouting, “Happy birthday!”
“He’s a dear, dear friend, and we wanted to celebrate with him,” says Taylor, who planned the surprise bash after hearing Boone, who was turning 50, mention that he’s partial to costume parties.
Guests arrived at 6 p.m. wearing feathered masks that Taylor enclosed with the invitations, and were treated to “top of the line, delicious comfort food,” provided by Sascha’s Catering. A myriad of lit candles, lush green floral arrangements and jazzy music set the mood for the evening, which had a “Garden of Eden feel,” according to Boone. The food, which included fried chicken, mini-crab balls and corn muffins, was arranged on a center table in the dining room around a life-size mannequin that Taylor had covered in silk flowers and a lush ostrich-plume hat.
“I’m always impressed by Barbara,” says Boone. “It was a very elaborate scheme.” But be warned, Barbara— Boone let Style in on a little secret: “I’ll get her back.” —Lia Gormsen
