Socially Speaking In the Land of Pleasant Living

Happy Fall to everyone and we already had snow in some parts. Do you believe it?  It’s been quite awhile since my last column—My apologies… But, I’m back in the saddle and hope you enjoy!  So much fun coming up you will get sick of me.. Nah.. from all the fantastic emails I get you love it!  I thank you for that!

A LOOK BACK ON A GRAND PRIX

This long planned event dodged the earthquake, Hurricane Irene and all the naysayers with egg on their faces now. We started our PRIX experience on a Friday evening at Radcliffe Jewelers, in Pikesville for a charity reception to benefit Sinai’s Children’s Center. In addition to being surrounded by some of the most beautiful baubles anywhere, folks enjoyed fantastic food and drink in anticipation of the special guest, Grand Prix’s premier driver Dario Franchitti. Unlike his professional goal of being first, Franchitti ran quite late but the crowd cheered when he arrived. Spotted were WJZ-TV’s Marty Bass and his wife Sharon, Francis Reeves and her hubby Tom Koch, Baltimore Sun’s Social/Society Columnist and fashionista- Sloane Brown and Edie and Stan Brown. A spirited auction by Rick Opfer certainly boosted the charitable arm of this event in addition to the TW Steel watch sales for whom Fanchitti was pretty face of…

MY RACE DAY
Truly a Sunday FunDAY!~~~ We started our day at the Ritz Carlton for a Race Day brunch hosted by residents Ray and Janice Ferguson who also served as our race day guides. Strolling through the Inner Harbor with all the hustle bustle was terrific. Before I go on I would like to congratulate Grand Prix Prez Jay Davidson and Peter Collier who served as the Chief Operating Officer of the event-Well Done!  Spotted in the crowds were Maryland Cosmetic Surgery Center’s Dr. Michael Cohen, B’more residents & college lacrosse players including Cathy Hebert (University of Cincinnati), Jesse Schuman (Mount St. Mary’s) and former Princeton goalie turned America’s Next Top Model” finalist, Jane Randall to name a very few.  The fun continued when we headed to the beautiful Zenith Penthouse, located at 511 West Pratt Street for a private party held by the fun folks with Advanced Pain Management-The Spine Specialist. With phenomenal panoramic views, we watched the racers fly down Pratt Street and hug the curves around Camden Yards while enjoying fabulous food from Jerry’s Seafood.
“ I would highly recommend corporations utilizing the Grand Prix for networking in the future.  It is a once a year event that does draw interest.  Motor Car Racing around the world is huge and will grow substantially here in the States,” said Advanced Pain Management’s Margaret Evans.

ANCHORS AWAY FOR WASHINGTON REDSKINS

Some say the two happiest days of a boater’s life are the day he buys it, and the day he sells it. If any of that is true there is a happy man just south of Baltimore.  The Lady Anne (LOVE THE NAME), at 224 feet one of the 100 biggest yachts in the world, was sold to an investment group that includes Washington Redskins owner Dan Snyder. The bottom line for the deal, which wrapped up last month, was not revealed, but is thought to be in the $70 million end zone. Why, that’s only three NFL salaries!
The big-ticket item is barely a nick to Snyder, whose fortune is estimated at $1.1 billion.  From some of the Redskin fans grumblings of late they wish he would sell the team! Tee-Hee.

Socially Speaking of the well to do…
-Checks in the Mail-
Madoff bankruptcy trustee Irving Picard says the checks — some $312 million worth — are on the way to more than 1,200 of Bernie Madoff’s investors. Hardly a windfall. The average payment is $253,660 — or 4.6 cents on the dollar. EEKS..
Really? As of last month, according to my sources Picard has recovered more than $8 billion from the Ponzi scheme’s investors who took out more than they put in. The checks mailed were earmarked for investors who put in more than they took out. A little bit is better than none. But more would be best, I bet…

FALLSTON JUST GOT MORE FABULOUS

Recently, I went to the newly opened Mallet Restaurant and Crabhouse located on the corner of Mountain Road (Route 152) and Belair Road (Route 1) and even though this locale has had many identities, I’m betting this one is here to stay.  Owner, Tony Ashe who is part of a consortium on investors, welcomed us and gave a tour of this massive establishment. No doubt there is something for everyone here. If you want intimate fine dining, you got it…  Family dining, you got it. If you’re in the mood for a raw bar experience, you got that too. And, if its sports viewing, then I can’t recall a better place. I will say one of my favorite rooms was the gorgeous Martini/ Tapas Bar.  In the warmer months folks will be able to enjoy outdoor dining on steamed crabs with an amazing Tiki Bar.
Now onto the wonderful food. No two people in the food industry do I respect more than Chef Davide Rossi and his lovely wife Christa formerly of Paza Luna Restaurant. They guided the collaboration of the Mallet’s menu and it did not disappoint.
Our tasting included freshly made sushi, Soup de Jour, an incredible cream of mushroom and plenty of yums we Marylanders have come to love and call our own.
Customers can review and download the menus at the website http://www.malletrestaurant.com. The Mallet Restaurant and Crabhouse is open 7 days a week for lunch, dinner, as well as early and late happy hours. Crabs are served year round and available for carryout.

Just the beginning

The Mallet Restaurant and Crabhouse is just getting started. There is so much more to come. Think brunch, comedy nights, volleyball tournaments, reunions, charity events, corporate team building, and celebrity events…. In fact, make sure to check out their upcoming entertainment schedule.

FROM THE DID HE REALLY SAY THAT FILE?

Last Sunday, on a popular local Sports Raven Pre-Game show hosted by sports icon Stan The Fan, guest former Raven defensive end, Rob Burnett commented to the Stan that sometimes players get “stale on coaching—you know the same message gets old-  sorta like the pre game national anthem gets old.” WHAT???  Got news for you Mr. Burnett, The Star Spangled Banner never gets old to this American !

• ON A PERSONAL NOTE
• My heart is broken for the ownership & staff of the historic Mount Washington Tavern which recently suffered a devastating fire that consumed this local landmark. Like many, I have spent many fun times there and now my kids do—which is cool because that’s where I met their Dad. Godspeed to the Tavern.
