Socially Speaking
Amidst all this Spring rain, the legendary outdoors writer, Bill Burton, caught one of the few sunny weekends for his 52nd annual “Water and Woods” fishing event. We kicked off the weekend at Harrison’s, on Tilghman Island, with a fantastic Friday evening dinner, attended by many FOB’s (Friends Of Bill’s-the original one), including United States Senator Barbara Mikulski.
After the meal, many of us adjourned to the bar where the famous, or should I say infamous, Captain Buddy Harrison, held court even giving this newbie fisherman some advice for the next morning’s activities.
Well I don’t care what anyone says, five in the morning does not look good on anybody, but with a strict schedule all gathered for breakfast and boat assignment. My designation was aboard the Miss Julie, with Captain Curtis and his grandson Connor as his stellar deckhand.
Off we went into the beautiful Chesapeake Bay for my debut of rock fishing along with three men and another lady, who just so happened to be my Mom, Sylvia Badger. All of us picked numbers out of a hat to set the pecking order for the day.
Mom’s rod popped first, and there she went reeling away and hauled in this almost four foot, forty- four pound rockfish! Now the standard was set pretty high for the rest of us, and I was up next and it didn’t take very long for my rod to make the ping.
If I didn’t pull a muscle jumping up, I surely did reeling this fish in. Now my rockfish was not as long as my mother’s, but just as weighty.
The girls had spoken and now it was the boys turn to match our catch. But sadly for them, the Chesapeake Bay gods, or should I say goddesses, would not grant them a single bite for the rest of the day
Great Chef Cooking For a Great Cause
The Family Tree’s 18th annual Great Chefs’ Dinner packed the Grand Masonic Lodge in Hunt Valley last week. Attendees started with a cocktail hour and mixed and mingled while bidding on a huge silent auction.
Some of those spotted doing some pre-dinner socializing included Radcliffe Jewelers’ Paul and Karen Winicki, Antrim 1844 Country Inn’s Dort Mollet, Family Tree’s Executive Director Patricia Cronin, Dr. Jeff Kalkstein and his wife Megan, Modern Babies and Children Magazine’s Jay and Karen Buck and the newly engaged beaming couple, Baltimore’s skating sweetheart, Dorothy Hamill and John MacColl.
The multi course dinner was prepared by world renowned Chef Jean-Claude Garzia and all of the tables were decorated by some of the Maryland’s finest designers such as Andrew Zill and Stephanie Bradshaw to name a very few. Editor of Style Magazine, Brian Lawrence and I were seated at a fabulous table that included, just off the NFL Draft weekend, Eric DeCosta and his wife Lacie.
After chatting it up, I learned that not only is DeCosta great at spotting football talent, but also of picking a spouse, who is a local Baltimorean and graduate of Maryvale Prep, in Brooklandville. The evening was made complete for me by running into one of my favorite people, Aris Melissaratos, who was also there in support of the great works of The Family Tree.
This wonderful organization works to improve our community by providing solutions to prevent child abuse. If you would like to learn more please visit their brand new website http://www.familytreemd.org or call the Director of Development Mary Francioli at 410-889-2300.
SPOTTED
I stopped into Mr. Charles Market, off Park Heights Avenue, to grab something for dinner and retired Raven, Jonathan Ogden, who was back in Baltimore for his poker tournament held this past weekend, rolled in to get his grub too.
Happy 30th Anniversary
Hard to believe it’s been 30 years since the Shops at Kenilworth, in Towson opened. To celebrate, the folks from the Maryland State Department of Business and Economic Development joined with local dignitaries, special guests and the public on Tuesday to cheer this community staple. Baltimore County Executive, Jim Smith, was there and proudly unveiled the newly refurbished fountain in the main court.
