Haaha loved your article…I have been blessed(on some days) with chronically curly hair and I lived the first 13 years of my life feeling like an outsider ... however after realizing that I was different and exotic to some degree raspberry I gave up my struggle to fit in and now just enjoy the envy looks of chronically straight hair girls smile who have to try so hard to be different…..loved your column and completely identified with it….

Really fun stuff to read. What an interesting column. Glad to see this kind of editorial.

Why is it that we always want what we don’t have! I have coarse, straight black Asian hair. I told my husband if my babies aren’t born with curls like his… I’m giving them a PERM!

I love Sarah Gilbert’s hilarious hair essay but have absolutely no sympathy with her complaints about the curly stuff.  I was born bald and stayed that way for close to a year, I’m told.  For the past 82 years it’s been lanky, dismally straight, nairy so much as a bend, and mouse coloured, I think;  I haven’t seen its true colour for about 50 years.  But thanks, Sarah, for a great laugh.

I’m with Linda. Curly hair envy has been my choice through life, however we all know the grass is always greener… I have never had blonde hair nor have I been blessed with silky anything. Picture thin and limp. Whenever my “just does what it pleases coif” needs coralling, I always reach past my daughter’s straight iron and go right for her curling one. Your article has sparked my interest in trying to iron out the waves. BTW, yours looks great. I’m jealous.

I could totally relate to your story—especially the part about feeling compelled to explain to people who compliment your straightened hair that it is actually curly! Boy, do I get some pitiful looks when I do that, too. Thanks for the belly laugh! I’m glad to know that someone else is also living with these kind of (peculiar) thoughts about their hair!

I have curly hair, just wish I had more of it. Sarah is a wonderful writer and her stuff is really fun to read.

I have Curly Hair Envy and your essay can’t change that, although it did change my mood from grumpy and frowning to happy and laughing. Thanks for making my day! Your writing is fun to read!!

As a sufferer of CCH (chronically curly hair), I’d like to congratulate you on your straight locks. I curse the humidity down here in South Carolina, as we only have about 5 days each year without 99% humidity, and straighten my hair each morning with the hopes of flowing, glossy straight hair. It’s nice to know this is actually attainable. Look out for those chin hairs, though! eek.
