Sherri Minkin has been running her party planning business and team of seven from her home office since 1980. She specializes in weddings, parties and corporate events throughout Baltimore and into Washington, Pennsylvania and New York. "You become very close to the family," says Minkin. She has helped pull off everything from a Space Odyssey Bar Mitzvah complete with set designer and robot band to a fast-track wedding--- her own daughter's-- that was planned just one-month in advance. "I tell my girls, you are the eyes and ears of the bride," says Minkin, who tries to send two planners to every party. She recommends contacting her firm 6 to 12 months in advance. Affairs to Remember charges $500 for on-site coordination of the wedding day or party, and $3,000 and up for planning the entire event.

Rita Bloom, CSEP started her party planning business in 1968. Along with her team: Ayran Kanter, Marylin Cave Bradley, and Tracy Bloom Schwartz, CSEP, they have created an international business. Creative Parties specializes in weddings, corporate events, anniversaries, bar and bat mitzvahs and birthdays. Rita Bloom says she and her partners enjoy both short term and long term planning. "We can do a party in 15 minutes," says Blum. "It just took us 15 years to be able to do it!" Creative Parties says it can put together a package for any budget. Fees are 15 to 20 percent of the bill for corporate events and $5,000 to $10,000 for social events. Their boutique in Bethesda offers invitations, from traditional to custom creations; calligraphy, by hand or machine; guest books, bridal party gifts, ring bearer pillows and flower girl baskets, and loads of specialty items.
