A Cool Holiday Happening

When I heard 40 ice carvers had flown to the U.S. from China to transform two million pounds of ice into ICE, a walk-through holiday happening at the Gaylord National Hotel, I had to check it out.

Well, it’s very, very cool.

Before entering ICE, we are each given a parka to keep us warm and toasty inside a massive tent with refrigerator-like temperatures.  We wind our way through colorful ice displays of various Dreamworks Merry Madagascar characters plus Santa and his reindeer crash landing on the island of Madagascar, a clear ice nativity scene and two-storey ice slide that provides plenty of thrills (and chills) to anyone inclined to take a slide. My favorite? The ice sculptures with lights frozen inside—what a gorgeous glow!

Gaylord National Resort and Convention CenterThe resort is packed with holiday happenings -

A nightly 60’ glass tree lighting show complete with an indoor snowfall and dancing fountain—2 million lights are used to decorate the place.

Brunch with Santa or photos with Santa and plenty of famous costumed characters such as Puss In Boots are nearby.

Gingy, a life-size gingerbread man, plays host at a gingerbread house where families can purchase a gingerbread decorating kit, decorate it while Gingy looks on and take their artistic creation home for the holidays.

Gaylord National Resort and Convention CenterWe’re always looking for festive places to take kids.  This one is about an hour’s drive from downtown Baltimore, just off the Washington Beltway.
