Furocious

Autumn Falls for Fido with Fun & Furry Fundraisers

Not long ago, it may have been the dog days of summer, but it’s clear to FUROCIOUS everyone is falling for Fido with furry fundraising festivities - – here are some highlights:

A nice canine “caternet” with that biscuit will do nicely, thank you.  A patio party for the pooches to benefit the Montgomery County Humane Society, Bark and Wine will be held Tuesday, September 14, 5:30 PM to 8:30 PM in Bethesda sponsored by Bone Jour and Redwood Restaurant & Bar. Bipeds, brings your dogs to this outdoor patio party with drink and food specials. Proceeds benefit homeless animals of Montgomery County Humane Society.  Donation at the Door: $10 pp/$15 couple.  For more information visit http://www.mchumane.org/

Step on up Saturday, September 18th from noon to 4PM at the Steppingstone Museum in Havre de Grace for Wag Your Tail It’s Time for Ale benefit for the Fallston Animal Rescue Movement (FARM) located in Harford County.  Photographer and animal devotee, Amy Jones tells us that since it was founded in 2000 by Greg and Barbara Bertling, the FARM has rescued and placed 8000 dogs and cats – many of them animals from other shelters where they would have been euthanized.  Admission is $15 for adults, $8 for kids 12-21; kids under 12 and dogs (!) are FREE. Call 410.671.PLAY (7529) for more info.

Canines and Cocktails for a Cause (and you thought FUROCIOUS liked alliteration) gives Spot a chance to get all dressed up to help the National Canine Cancer Foundation (my first dog, a poodle, passed from cancer) at a yappy hour Friday, September 24, 5:30-7:30 PM, at the Loews Annapolis Weather Rail (outside patio), 126 West Street, Annapolis.  There will be a fall costume contest, silent auction, raffles, munchies. Admission is FREE to well-behaved dogs and their humans. Event sponsored by the pet-friendly Loews Annapolis Hotel and Paws Pet Boutiqe on State Circle. For more info call 410.295.3202

Even if you named your dog “Mulligan” (no explanation needed), you’re sure to enjoy the 2nd annual Putts Fore Mutts Golf Tournament benefitting the Anne Arundel County SPCA on Monday, September 27.  This four person scramble, organized by The Annapolis Putts-Fore-Mutts (APFM), will take place at Queenstown Harbor Golf Course, Queenstown, MD. Registration is at 10AM, shotgun start at 11AM. Tickets are $125 per person.  For more information go to http://www.puttsforemutts.com/, call 443.253.8988 for tournament director Bill Villiers.

For visiting residents and patients in assisted living such as veterans hospitals, nursing homes and rehabilitation facilities, the moniker of this all-volunteer organization could only get better if it meant dogs could drive themselves! Pets On Wheels annual Dog-a-Thon is the organization’s largest fundraiser where sponsored bipeds have less than a mile to walk (even FUROCIOUS could do that!).  Pets are welcome to bring their humans for demos, contests and enjoy vendors galore from 10AM-5PM, Saturday, October 2, at Oregon Ridge Park in Cockeysville. Raffle, silent auction, food from Jake’s, pet photographer and music by DJGREYHOUND.  Call 410.913.5569, visit http://baltopow.org/dog-a-thon2010.htm.

House or hound-bound?  No worries.  You don’t have to leave the comfort of your computer to help our four-legged buddies. The MDSPCA (Baltimore) has something for everyone with their sixth annual online auction - Shop-A-Paw-Looza.  This online event officially opens bidding on Friday, October 1 and continues through Tuesday, October 26.  The MDSPCA is currently collecting items for the auction. What a great way to kick-off your holiday buying frenzy http://www.mdspca.org/events/shopapawlooza.html.
