Well done, Lisa. -Cogitamus..proudly
Hadn’t thought about any o’ that but looked at Rita’s pic and thought…“How sadly transient”—
—Is human beauty. And most of the little of it is Girl.
We should celebrate and look fondly on the primping and posing and the never forgetting that it’s all so evanescent.
Good point.
Most of us want to, if not be beautiful, then at least look our best. Fashion is one way of achieving that. And yes, we are judged by how we look. Beautiful, thought-provoking essay from you.. and haunting words from Miyake.
See the movie The Last Emperor - about Valentino, the legendary dress designer. This will tell you why fashion is important.
People who claim that style doesn’t matter and that clothes are frivolous have never had a garment that fits and feels and looks great. Too bad for them.
What a lovely reminder to be a practitioner of beauty - that it does matter. It was a good reminder to me, to make the extra effort. Not that I am anti-fashion by any stretch but as the mother of a daughter under two, it has been easier to focus on her fashion rather than mine!
Ah, so beautifully written, and so true.
I especially loved the part wherein you address pseudo-feminist put-downs of All Things Fashionable—since when does supporting equal rights for all translate to shunning beauty in one’s life?
I, for one, consider fashion an art form, and a beautiful art form at that. If my grandmother were still alive, I’d get her to tell you some of her WWII stories about fashion and beauty, about how she and her girlfriends used to call each other when someone found a wayward silk parachute in a tree, and they’d scurry over and divide up the shiny, beautiful fabric so they could go home and sew themselves pretty lingerie.
Excellent post, Glamor Girl!
