What Not To Wear (but they do anyway)

The other day, the Sun published an article by Jill Rosen dubbed “The Young and the Dressed Less” (I know, very clever—hats off to Jill for that!) about the stupefyingly bad choices interns are apparently making in what they wear to work.  I know I shouldn’t be surprised by this stuff by now, but still, I am.

I can’t understand how an otherwise rational, intelligent person of 20-something has to have it explained to him/her that no, hot pants are not appropriate office attire, cleavage is best left for the nightclub, not cubicle-land, and cut-offs with your hairy legs sticking out are not what’s meant by “casual Friday.”  Neither is this:

That photo is taken from the slideshow accompanying the article.  Be sure to give it a look.

The story also mentions the HBO Series “Curb Your Enthusiasm”, created by and starring Glamour Girl’s No. 1 heartthrob, Larry David (yes, it’s true; fair disclosure—we are a match made in heaven).  If you haven’t seen the episode referenced, well, I can only say you’re missing one of the most hilarious bits of a hilarious series.

Here’s one that drives me crazy, whether the cap is pointed forwards or backwards:

I don’t get it.  What’s with this look?  It’s ubiquitous.  And has been for at least 15 years.  Where is the appeal?  And not only do guys insist on wearing these hideous things all over the place, to all kinds of events, but even when they step inside.  Hello??  You take your hat off when you go inside, mates, and especially, especially, in a nice restaurant.

No, it’s not my 53 years yelling “get offa my lawn!”—I was this way even at 16.  Get a clue, mes amis.  Your clothes—and therefore, you—are speaking, whether you realize it or not.  If you want to be treated like a professional, then dress like one.

And let me head this off at the pass right now—a little common sense goes a long way, or it should:  the dress code at a young, casual IT company is going to be different from that at an ad agency or a bank.  Or a radio network, for that matter, something with which I have a passing acquaintance.  But you should be able to figure this out on your own.

(I would link to the has-to-be-seen-to-be-believed PeopleofWalmart.com, but there’s so little that’s family-friendly over there, even though the photos are all legitimate.  You can find it easily enough if you want to.  Those outfits, too, show up on city streets and in workplaces.  The mind reels.)
