Margi Kent

Los Angeles-based fashion designer and celebrity stylist Margi Kent stepped away from her carefully crafted mound of fabrics. Ready to dive back into the industry with her Fall ’09 collection, she was happy to welcome us into her world. “It’s not just about dressing someone,” Kent says. “It’s helping to define who they are as a person, or who they want to be. It’s finding out what makes a person unique, and then creating an image that reflects that unique nature.” From custom designing icon Stevie Nick’s dramatic, rocker wardrobe to working closely with Meryl Streep (for starters), we knew Kent had plenty to spill when it came to fashion faves and inspirations.

What’s in your handbag?
1. Blackberry Storm
2. Camera
3. Lip balm

What is the color and who is the designer?
It’s black leather, and it’s made by Gi-Gi, a new line to be rolled out in the fall!

What new fashion trends are you following?
Nothing is new so I make sure everything is about the fit, the quality, and the correct proportion.

What old trends are you still a fan of?
Mixing textures is always in with me.

What do you throw on for comfort?
My 4-way style basic pants from the line. I live in them.

What was your biggest shopping splurge?
Abstract art and artsy jewelry!!!

Where do you go when you get the urge to shop?
Art Galleries. Do you see a theme? And fine specialty stores with an independent attitude.

How many pairs of shoes are in your closet?
Shoes…too many. I’m a size 4 ½. My feet are extinct so I buy anything that fits. My real love is boots!

What is your preferred brand of shampoo?
Suds FX and Botanicals

What piece from your line do you wear most often?
Since I’m always cold, I designed a fuzzy cowl shrug type garment. I’m never without one, even in the summer!

What celebrities have you worked with?
Meryl Streep, Demi Moore, Mariah Carey, Kim Cattrall, Teri Hatcher, Neil Diamond, and Stevie Nicks to name a few.

Who was the most enjoyable person you’ve styled?
It has to be George Harrison because of his sense of humor and Neil Diamond because he trusted me.

What was it like styling Stevie Nicks?
It’s always playing dress up just like when we first started working (and playing) together.

Above: One of Kent’s many creations for Stevie Nicks.

What is your favorite item in your Fall ’09 line?
Several – the sexy confetti cocktail dress, the high collar cascade tunic, and the raja pants

Where do you get your inspiration?
From art and real world living

How do you go about styling each individual in their own way?
I listen and design to project the attitude of the individual.
