Making the World a Better Place One Bracelet at a Time
Troop 2270 in South Baltimore and Troop 7460 from Barclay Elementary/Middle School are making mother-child bracelets as part of a community service project that will benefit women around the world, including earthquake victims in Haiti. The bracelets of green and blue thread—Jhpiego’s colors—feature two white beads, the larger bead representing the mother and the smaller bead representing the child. The bracelets stem from an Indian tradition in which a person gives a ‘Rahki’ bracelet to loved ones as a symbol of their commitment to care for and protect them—representative of Jhpiego’s commitment to care for and protect women and their families.
“The Girl Scouts’ involvement in this project is one small way to help ensure that pregnant women and newborns in Haiti and elsewhere have the services they need to deliver their babies safely,” says Jhpiego CEO, Leslie Mancuso.

The Fashion for Paws Runway Show includes 3 different categories of models walking the runway. The heart and soul of the event are the fundraising models who agree to raise funds in the weeks leading up to the fashion show and participate in a friendly fundraising competition. The top male and female fundraiser will be awarded the title “Model Washingtonian of the Year,” on the runway. Proceeds raised will benefit the Washington Humane Society.
