Il Scalino Market Salumeria

Hard to believe, but until recently, Little Italy did not have a full-line Italian grocery and delicatessen. Il Scalino Market Salumeria was opened a few months ago by Buffalo, N.Y., native Rocco DiPietro, in partnership with Nino Germano of La Scala. DiPietro, who has lived in Baltimore for the past four years, wanted to bring an authentic Italian grocery and deli to the neighborhood, and has created a handsome space stocked with the bright labels of imported olive oils and vinegars, pastas, tomato products, cookies and canned goods. There’s a well-edited selection of mostly Italian wines in back, and a deli counter up front with a wide array of meats, artisan cheeses, breads and seafood. And there are freshly made sandwiches and grilled paninis to go. (313 S. High St., 410-547-7900)
