Toast of the Town

The “F” word

Just what I needed: Another crush on someone in the food business. Move over Tom Colicchio, I am loving Alton Brown.

It’ll be the first and last time you’ll see me write the word ‘FOODIE.’  If you know me, you know I don’t recognize the word . However, when Alton Brown is at the Hippodrome and the name of the event is “The Foodie Experience” I have to acknowledge it. But only this time.

Before seeing him live, he wasn’t my FAVORITE on the Food Network. He seemed too corny and quirky for my taste, but after seeing him and hearing his views on some serious matters that came off as light-hearted and funny, he has now moved to a higher ranking. Not only that, we share the same feeling about Duff Goldman. He said, and I quote: “The Ace of inedible cakes”. SO right on. Thanks Alton, you passed.  In addition, he offered an e-mail address you could e-mail questions to him. It was a great way to get the audience to participate in the show. Many good questions. Although I did try to send a few, they kept bouncing back. I had the wrong e-mail.  Oh well.

Thank you to editor Brian Lawrence for taking me to the show.

After the performance was over, we dashed out to the lobby to try some tasty things from some local restaurants. We were able to sample some delicious bites. I tried LaScala’s Orecchiette with Bolognese, City Café’s tuna tartare with truffled oil, Againn’s Bangers-and-mash, and RA sushi’s tuna tartare with avocado. There were plenty of other food vendors there, but we booked out of there when the show let out. People were coming in droves to eat this food and we were happy to hit the door. A great job done by all, including the Hippodrome and all the restaurants who participated.

Off to the Harbor Ball…
When we arrived, the party was in full swing. The music was pumping by band “That’s What She Said” and the silent auction table was swarmed with people, buying things to benefit the Fells Point Resident’s Association and the Preservation Society. Charm City food tours was represented with a few tickets to Federal Hill and Fell Point food tours.  Surely they were a nice addition for raising some money for the event. Kudos to Cindy and Kerry Plackmeyer . They chaired the Harbor ball and did a stellar job. After months and months of preparation, it was great to see them all dressed up and relaxing a bit. Cindy was looking absolutely stunning in her rhinestone-clad dress, Kerry in his “sailor” bowtie.  By the time we got there, the food, provided by Nancy Longo’s Pierpoint, was just about through being served, but I stepped to the backstage and Nancy fed me some quesadillas, chicken on a stick and flank steak. Yummy good! Nancy is part of our food tours and while we have her delicious smoked crab cakes on the tour, I didn’t see any at the event. That’s OK though, I was happy she was still able to feed me off the clock.

A great “Foodie Experience” weekend. There. That’ll be the last time I say it.
