Toast of the Town

Keeping it simple

I didn’t finish Omnivore’s Dilemma, by Michael Pollan -it has been sitting on my bedside table for, dare I say it: YEARS. I’m always looking for inspiration, so when I heard the author was in town, for Stevenson University’s Baltimore Speaker Series, I thought it would be the perfect excuse to finish this book, as I am truly interested in his viewpoints.
After asking everyone in town for tickets, I finally got one, and happy I was, to do so.
Just how deep can you get on the subject of food? Oh, he got deep.  Into health, sciences, culture, Western vs. Eastern world and the way we as Americans, tend to make poor food choices simply because of the way food manufacturer’s introduce these things to us in our friendly grocery stores. Many other health concerns were raised during his talk. He could go on and on…and did, but it all made perfect sense.
If you’re into food, where it comes from, why we eat the way we do and what we can do to eat better, I would suggest reading one of his books.  Then, keep it super simple.  The 3 things I took away from tonight and I was glad to hear, as it can get pretty intricate:
COOK your own food-as opposed to microwaving it or buying pre-packaged meals,
Eat more plants than meat and if you MUST eat meat, save it for a rare occasion
AND
Do not become a fanatic, either way
That was the gist of it.
In the meantime, I am dusting off the book and looking forward to the next one.
