Style Magazine

Style is Baltimore’s preeminent lifestyle magazine covering home and garden, fashion, food, travel, and local personalities.

Published 7x year, the print edition of Style is read by an audience of more than 90,000. According to our most recent market research study, over 50% of our audience read, enjoy and keep Style “on the coffee table” for more than four weeks. That’s why it is a “must buy” for advertisers who wish to talk intimately with a buying-oriented audience whose median income is $178,400.

Now, more than ever, there are greater advertising opportunities associated with Style. Over 39,000 unique visitors each month log on to http://www.baltimorestyle.com. These online visitors explore recipes, entertainment listings, past issues and our guides for what to do, where to go and how to do it all with style.

Whether it is our e-newsletter, a tile, a banner or a featured listing and link on our website, you will benefit from reaching the audience that makes cash registers ring all over town.

In fact, 84.5% of our readers have taken one or more actions in the last 12 months as a result of reading an article or seeing an ad in Style.

VOLVO ROAD TRIP WINNERS

Check out the winners of the Volvo Road Trip Sweepstakes!

It’s always a great time to explore the beauty of the Chesapeake Bay, and touring in the all-new Volvo S80 makes it more enjoyable than ever. Whether visiting the quaint Victorian town of St. Michaels, sightseeing along the historic streets of Easton or taking the ferry between Oxford and Bellevue, there’s plenty for landlubbers and seafaring folk to do and see.

As one of the winners of the Volvo Road Trip Sweepstakes, Diane Seegull and her husband Larry enjoyed a relaxing weekend in the Easton/St. Michael’s area and use of a brand new Volvo S80 to enjoy all the magnificent sights of the Chesapeake region. “We really enjoyed driving the Volvo S80 to the Eastern Shore.  It’s a very comfortable and fun car to drive.” The Inn at Perry Cabin provided the couple with perfect accommodations for a romantic weekend getaway and Diane and Larry enjoyed delicious meals at Mason’s and The Crab Claw restaurant. Along their travels, the couple immersed themselves in the Chesapeake Bay’s rich history and culture by visiting The Academy Art Museum, the Museum at the Historical Society of Talbot and the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum, where they climbed the lighthouse for spectacular views. “The museum looked great and we plan to come back in the spring with our sons to really take time and see all the exhibits,” Diane says. When Diane and her husband return in the spring, they look forward to sailing on the H.M Krentz, The Lady Patty and the Oxford-Bellevue Ferry, as well as enjoying a round of golf at the Hog Neck Golf Course, all compliments of the Volvo Road Trip Sweepstakes. The couple also won a pair of BSO tickets and a 2GB iPod loaded with BSO music. Diane and her husband thank Volvo, Alter Communications, and all the participating businesses for a memorable getaway to the Chesapeake Bay region.

No matter when you hit the road, it’s always the perfect time to get into the all-new Volvo S80 and head toward Garrett County and the breathtaking beauty of Deep Creek Lake. Outdoor aficionados and adventure-lovers alike will appreciate the scenic views and unlimited activities, including fishing, boating, whitewater rafting, and more, that can be enjoyed throughout the year.

In early November, Beth Haneke and her brother Ben embarked on their Volvo Road Tip to the Deep Creek area. After a quick introduction on the features of the Volvo S80 that they would be driving for the weekend, they headed towards Garrett County. On Saturday, they began their weekend at the Fireside Deli for lunch and a wine tasting where they enjoyed hot Panini’s and received a complimentary bottle of wine. “I have to say that was probably one of the best sandwiches I’ve ever had! It was absolutely delicious,” Beth said. Later that day, Beth and Ben went to Pleasant Valley Dream Rides for a horse-drawn carriage ride through the Amish farm community. During their trip, Beth and Ben enjoyed meals at the Cornish Manor Inn and Little Sandy’s Restaurant. The Mountain Coaster, a single car coaster that takes you spiraling through the woods, didn’t appeal much to Beth because of her fear of heights. So, Beth gave her tickets to their server at Little Sandy’s for her to use with her grandchildren. Their lake-front timber-framed home, provided by Coldwell Banker Deep Creek Realty, came equipped with everything they needed for the weekend including a pool table, massaging recliner, internet access, and decks with spectacular views. Beth recalls, “I found the Master Suite and looked out the back door to find a hot tub! Forget the bathtub; I know where I’m soaking!” On Sunday, Beth and Ben visited the B&O Railroad 1884 Queen Anne Station and Adventure Sports Complex International. After a busy and exciting weekend, Beth says she slept like a baby in the Volvo S80 on the ride home to Annapolis.

1) All Alter Communications contests are open to all Alter Communications online and/or print users twenty-one years of age or older, unless otherwise specified. No purchase is necessary. Alter Communications reserves the right to cancel this contest at any time. One entry per household.

2) Sweepstakes/contests staged by Alter Communications, unless otherwise noted, are open to residents of MD, PA, DE, VA, WV OR DC and void where prohibited by law.

3) Odds of winning a prize from Alter Communications will depend on the number of qualified entries.

4) All contest entries become the sole property of Alter Communications. Furthermore, Alter Communications may withhold any contest materials crucial to the completion of the contest.

5) Only one winner or qualifier per family or household will be allowed in any 30-day period.

6) All contestants acknowledge as a condition of entry that Alter Communications has a right to publicize or publish the winner’s name, character, likeness, voice, or all matters incidental herein.

7) All prizes are non-transferable and void where prohibited by law. No cash substitution of prizes allowed.

8) Winners understand and agree that they are responsible for any and all taxes incurred on prizes received within the year of winning.

9) If required by Alter Communications or its affiliates, winners must sign a liability release prior to receiving their prize.

10) Prizes usually will be mailed either first, second, or third class U.S. Mail at the discretion of Alter Communications. If the prize is to be mailed, it is the responsibility of the winners to provide Alter Communications with a current and correct mailing address. Alter Communications is not responsible for, nor obligated to replace, any lost, stolen, or damaged prize sent through the U.S. Mail.

11) If the winner is instructed by Alter Communications or its affiliates to personally pick up a prize, it must be claimed within thirty calendar days of winning or by the date specified in the contest rules. Upon pick-up of prize, proper photo identification (i.e. valid driver’s license, passport) from the winner is required.

12) Alter Communications will not remind winners of the deadline for claiming their prize. It is the responsibility of the winner to claim the prize within the specified timeframe. All unclaimed prizes after thirty days will automatically be forfeited and may be awarded to another contestant. Alter Communications is at liberty to give away any unclaimed prize at the end of the thirty-day grace period.

13) Under “unique circumstances,” a representative designated by the winner will be allowed to accept the prize. Written authorization from the winner including representative’s name, ID, and a photocopy of the winner’s valid driver’s license is required. Alter Communications will qualify what constitutes a “unique circumstance.”

14) In the event that a winner voluntarily chooses to not accept a prize, he/she automatically forfeits all claims to that prize. Alter Communications then has the right, but not the obligation, to award that prize to a contest runner-up.

15) Alter Communications may substitute another prize of equal value, in the event of non-availability of a prize.

16) Alter Communications is not responsible for any defective prizes.

17) Alter Communications is not responsible for any computer, browser, server, or other equipment malfunction that may or may not interfere with contest entries. Winners will be selected only from entries received by the deadline.

18) Employees of Alter Communications, their affiliates, representatives, and their families or households are ineligible to enter/win any contest staged on Alter Communications.

19) Alter Communications, affiliates, sponsors or representatives absolve themselves of any liability, financial or otherwise, resulting from any contests staged by Alter Communications.

Additions or deletions to these rules may be made at the discretion of Alter Communications and may be enacted at any time. Basic Contest Rules are available for review during regular business hours at Alter Communications located at 1040 Park Ave, Suite 200, Baltimore, MD 21201. INTERNSHIPS

Style Magazine is a bimonthly lifestyle publication distributed to some 50,000 homes in the greater Baltimore area through a controlled list, a subscription base and sales from more than 250 newsstands. Published seven times each year, Style covers home design, personalities, fashion, entertaining, parenting, travel, food and other lifestyle topics-always keeping a Baltimore focus in mind. Our goal is to produce a local magazine with national quality writing, editing, photography and design.

Style interns are treated as editorial assistants and given opportunities to report and write front-of-book blurbs as well as bylined articles. The internship is best suited for upper-level or advanced college students with previous writing or journalism experience. Potential interns should be comfortable working in a professional environment, and comfortable working independently as well as collaboratively. History of Style

Style was founded in the early 80's as a four-color, glossy spin-off of the weekly Baltimore Jewish Times. Prior to that, the Baltimore Jewish Times was publishing occasional advertising supplements aimed at giving weekly newspaper advertisers an opportunity to showcase their merchandise and image in a four-color glossy format. These magazine-style supplements focused on single subjects such as fashion, home design or bridal. Because the glossy format proved a success among local retailers, publisher Chuck Buerger and his staff decided to spin it out to an additional controlled-circulation readership separate from the Jewish Times readership. In 1989, the first Style magazine began arriving in 30,000 mailboxes in specified zip codes in Baltimore city and Baltimore county.

By 1992, Buerger was ready to take the final step in Style’s evolution from ad supplement to consumer lifestyle magazine: He hired art director Brian Michael Lawrence and editor Kay Hudgens MacIntosh and charged them with making Style a full-fledged lifestyle magazine. Over the next year, the new hires, with the publisher’s backing, made numerous changes, including:

— Establishing a regular bi-monthly publishing schedule.

— Moving from single focus issues (all fashion, or all home design, for example) to issues that included the proverbial “something for everyone.” Cover packages would continue to concentrate on Style’s traditional subject areas-- bridal, fashion or home design.

— Expanding distribution through newsstands and by subscription.

MacIntosh and Lawrence also began building a reliable stable of writers and photographers. “It was a very exciting time,” recalls editor MacIntosh. “For a journalist, it was a dream job, to have a publisher say, ‘here, make this a real magazine and make it the best it can be.’ We started almost from scratch and asked, what would people like to see in a lifestyle magazine, what’s not being provided by other media.” “We were able to lure top notch photographers to the project,” says art director Lawrence, “and to print the book using first-rate color separations on high quality glossy paper. The look we created immediately helped us to stand out.”

The basic bimonthly format has remained intact, although the cycle of cover subjects has expanded to include such special issues as “Women over 40,” “Baltimore Countryside,” and “Favorite Foods.” The success of the Style formula, and the emphasis on quality writing and photography, was recognized in 1996 when the City and Regional Magazine Association honored Style with a third-place award for overall excellence, behind Philadelphia and Boston magazines.

Today, Style is mailed to some 45,000 homes, including a growing number of paid subscribers, and is sold on approximately 175 newsstands throughout Maryland and the District of Columbia. Founding publisher Chuck Buerger died in November of 1996 and was succeeded by his son, Andrew Buerger.
