More Parties

April 10-12
Whew! We’re in the midst of a busy spring party and benefit scene— with events going on almost every night of the week. Thursday night, I joined some 400 others at the opening of the Voss family equestrian paintings show at the Maryland Historical Society. The handsome crowd of included Stiles Colwill, Gregory Weidman, Michael Flanagan, Willis McGill, Stewart Shettle, Paul & Karen Winicki, Julie Kinney and Jim Halle. Over cocktails and dinner, guests roamed the upstairs galleries to view the 85 paintings of horses, pets and people by this local dynasty of equestrians.
On Friday night, several hundred artists and patrons jammed the galleries of Maryland Art Place for their annual Out of Order party. It was lively scene— art lining every wall, a great-looking crowd and fun ‘80s music. The crowd was so big, it spilled out into the lobby of MAP’s Power Plant Live digs. While trying to decide which pieces to bid on, I ran into Doreen Bolger, David & Michel Modell, Sam & Carter Polikoff, Lisa Poland, Jim Seay, Lisa Koogle, Jenn Marsh, John & Michelle Marsh, Jamie Campbell, Tom Brinkley, Carole Langrell , Pat & Jeanine Turner and Suzi Cordish. Around 11, we headed next door to Mosaic to check out the club scene there, in their beautifully expanded space.
Saturday turned out to be a beautiful, warm spring day, though the weather forecast had predicted rain. It made for a perfect day for the steeplechase race at My Lady’s Manor, one of my favorite spring events. With my pal Courtney Wood in tow, we roamed the grounds and visited with friends in the corporate tents, sipping Southsides all the while. I caught up with Greg Barnhill, Henry Wright, John Hargrave, John & Shannon Ware and Tom Koch, among many others. The only downside: the sunburn on my (unprotected) face from being outside in the sun all afternoon— but that’s a small price to pay for such a great day.
On Saturday night, it was downtown to the Patterson Theatre for Creative Alliance’s annual gala. This year, it had a circus theme, and was in full-swing when we arrived there at 9. Lots of people in costume and circus-style performances going on in every corner. In the crowd were Mimi Kapiloff, Michael Ross, Jon Kaplan & Joel Pearson, Tom Moore, Carole Langrell, Dolores Deluxe & Vince Peranio, Stiles Colwill, Doreen Bolger, Deni Tabor, Melissa Dickinson and Jim & Anne Burger. Great artwork in the show, too!
