Evening of Traditional Beverages: Scotch

Friday, June 5
I’m always happy to pitch in and volunteer for bartending duty each year at the Evening of Traditional Beverages to benefit Homewood House on the Johns Hopkins campus; this year’s beverage was Scotch. Two hundred and twenty people (a record for this event) bought tickets this year, and enjoyed tasting 5 different unblended malts. Because the weather was still iffy from the day’s earlier rains, the event was held in the Glass Pavilion, rather than the Homewood lawn where we usually set up. My fellow bartenders included stalwarts Jim Burger, Jim Carroll and Charles Profitt, and I have to say, we were a bit overwhelmed when the educational talk was over and the crowd of 220 immediately stampeded the bars! It turned out well, though, and everyone made their way through the 5 flights of single malts. I barely had time to sip one or two tastes over the next hour or so, but did have time to greet friends such as Sylvia and Rosalie Parker, Mark Letzer, Steve Ziger, Jamie Snead and Pam Huette . Catherine Rogers Arthur, director and curator of the Homewood Museum introduced me to Connie Fitzpatrick and her daughter Elizabeth, who’s just returned from graduating from St. Andrews in Scotland. She also pointed out one guest, Mildred Atkinson, age 100, who was heartily partaking of the evening. Others in the crowd included Diana Edwards Muraghan, Vernon & Lucy Wright and Karen & Todd Ruppert.

Afterward, I headed over to Shine Collective in Hampden to catch my friend John Marsh‘s debut party for his new line of T-shirts, called Charm City Surf Co. The party there was lively and the champagne was flowing, so I stuck around to buy a shirt and talk to friends Jamie Campbell, Dru Bynum, Jenn Marsh, photographer John Davis, Mike Lors and Michelle Li. By 11, that was winding down but everyone decided that the bar at Woodberry Kitchen was calling, so most of the gang headed over there to continue the party.
