This evening I was grabbing some dinner and drinks at Junior’s Wine Bar with my friend from the City Paper, Jenn Marsh. A few more pals happened by, and we ended up extending our stay for quite a while. At one point, as I was talking with Junior’s co-owner Jeff, a staff member rushed over to inform him that one of the gentlemen dining at the large round table of 8 was, in fact, TV celebrity Ted Allen. (He was the wine and food expert on “Queer Eye for the Straight Guy” and turns up on “Today” show segments and in Esquire magazine occasionally.) Allen will be a guest at the Baltimore Chefs & Wine Experience here in July, and there’s a rumor that he may be in town for a Food Network pilot being shot here this weekend. Whatever his reason for being here, it created a buzz at Junior’s. When he rose to leave, he walked past out table and, like most celebrities I see close-up, he’s tiny— much smaller than he appears on TV. What is up with that?
