Today I’m making my way down to the Port of Baltimore for a luncheon aboard the Carnival ship Pride, which will be disembarking for the Bahamas this evening. The cruise line has invited several hundred VIPs from the media, local government and travel industry to come aboard the ship for a tour and lunch. After getting through the rather lengthy security process (complete with multiple check points, a metal detector and having a photo snapped before stepping on board), I joined Diane & Larry Macklin and Eddie Applefeld for the speeches portion of the program, then we toured the ship and headed into the main dining room. Next to me at our table was WBAL general manager Jordan Wertlieb, and I also had time to talk to on-air reporter Kate Amara, Jayme Wood and Dorothy Fuchs. Later in the day, I head up to the Grand Lodge in Hunt Valley for this year’s Great Chefs’ Dinner to benefit the Family Tree. I’m one of the judges for the table design competition, and this year’s 38 tables are more extravagant and over-the-top than ever. It’s a hard process, but we winnow down the entries to winners in four categories. I also selected five tables that will be featured in the Nov. ‘Food Issue’ of the magazine.
