Brian Lawrence Live
May 15-16
The weather turned out to be great for this year’s Black-Eyed Susan Race, held on Friday, May 15. As I’ve said in the past, this day-before-Preakness event is an even better day to be at Pimlico than Preakness Day itself. The bonus this year was that we met Chip Woolley, the trainer to Derby champion, Mine that Bird. And then we proceeded to drink at the Inside Rail Bar with him all afternoon. Chip’s an extremely laid-back guy, and he entertained us with stories from the Derby and from his years in horse racing.
The weather on Saturday was a bit less promising, though the rain held off and it ended up being a pleasant day at the track, even if the crowds were thin. I started the day by meeting friends for lunch in the Jockey Club, where I ran into Christian Johansson, Heidi Slacum, Lisa Schatz and Warren Hemenway. Then it was down to the Corporate Village to the CBS tent to hang out with Diane & Larry Macklin, Anne Boone-Simanski and Edie Brown. In the course of the afternoon, I ran across Marty & Sharon Bass, Jody Zafrir, Alan Charles, Ed Norris, Reagan Warfield, Avery Strachan and Rudy Miller. Then it was back to our seats in the Grandstand to join friends Chris Whistead, Melissa Lembo, Denis Nash and Jonathan Wilkin for the big race.
