Silo Point hosted an exhibit and book signing for photographer Val Proudkii on the ground level of the complex. The lobby was transformed with dramatic lighting, glowing candles and a duo playing Indian music on a sitar and bongos. Hosts Pat & Jeaninie Turner, Eric Turner and Holly Winfield mingled with the guests, including Jim Seay, Sara Ingram and Kevin Wesner, all enjoying Indian-themed delicacies from Chef’s Expressions. We stopped by hoppin’ Miguel’s beforehand, running into Don & Maggie Farley dining with Hope Murphy, and Ayda Said, who was also headed to the exhibit. Afterward, it was a brief stop at The Wine Market, then a skip over to Harbor East for the Taco Fiesta 6th anniversary party, where I ran into The Oceannaire’s Nate Beachler, who was enjoying the party along with a big crowd of neighborhood folks.

Drove to D.C. in the rain this evening for a cocktail reception and dinner at the Hay-Adams Hotel. This classic old boutique hotel is across the street from the White House, and has undergone an extensive renovation since the last time I was here. We had time to sneak downstairs to the Off The Record bar before the reception started upstairs in the Lafayette Room. The dinner was sponsored by state of South Carolina to promote tourism and gathered a group of journalists and members of the state’s hospitality industry. We were greeted warmly by Heather Freeman of Heather Freeman PR and Dawn Dawson-House, director of PR for the state’s dept. of tourism. Baltimore designer Tiffany Zappulla was at my table, as well two writers from National Geographic Traveler and Matt Owen, director of PR for Salamander resorts. We then proceeded to enjoy a fantastic five-course dinner of South Carolina classics, courtesy of several chefs who’d come up specifically (and toted the local foods and produce as well) for the dinner.

It was a perfect spring evening for this year’s Harbor Ball, which benefits the Fells Point Preservation Society. The black-tie event was held on the Living Classrooms campus, overlooking the Inner Harbor. Guests included Cindy & Kerry Plackmeyer, Anne Gummerson, Adam Richter, Jim Seay, Celeste Corsaro, Fillippo Lapides, Diane & Larry Macklin, DJ Lamdin and Deni & Neal Tabor. Nancy Longo was on hand to oversee the food and party band Hot Mess provided the music.

Tonight, I was honored to be an invited guest at a private dinner for 30, held in the Hampton’s dining room at the InterContinental Harbor Court Hotel. The dinner was to welcome NYT columnist David Brooks to town for a speaking engagement as part of Stevenson University’s Baltimore Speakers Series. After a cocktail hour and photo opps, we settled down at the dinner table and a lively political discussion followed. Mr. Brooks proved to be witty, wise and completely entertaining.

On Wed. night, I joined six other media peeps for a great dinner tonight at Milan. A most-excellent roast chicken and nicely made Manhattan. Thursday, I stopped by the new Patrick Sutton Home store in Harbor East for a reception for artist Leslie Shellow, and enjoyed talking with Lisa Lewins, Robin Chesley and Lisa Schatz, before decamping across the street to the Oceannaire for some, wait for it… Manhattans. And on Friday, went to another reception for textile designer John Robshaw at Stiles Colwill‘s Halcyon House in Greenspring Valley. I got to catch up with Amy Newhall, Alex Baer, Steve Ziger, Jamie Snead and Mona Hajj before heading back out into the rain to catch most of the Maryland Terps game on TV at Tark‘s, where I also ran into Jack Gilden and David Schuler.

I’m a longtime supporter of the Baltimore School for the Arts, and every year at this time their Expressions show is something we look forward to. The evening started with a cocktail reception at 6:30, followed by the show at 8:00. Lots of familiar faces here (and most are here every year as well, to support this great local cause): Patrick Sutton, Tracy Kwiatkowski, William Whitehurst, Hope Schab, Amy Elias, Sam & Carter Polikoff, Larry & Leslie Polikoff, Jon Kaplan, Joel Pearson, Bruce Bodie, Carole & Bean Sibel, Edie & Stan Brown. Everyone had a great time milling around looking at student artwork until the rooms were packed to capacity, then it was time to file into our tables in the theatre and watch the spectacular show unfold. These are some VERY talented kids!

I joined the revelers this evening at City Paper‘s annual Cosmic Cocktail bash, held at AVAM. There was a line out the door to get into this event, always a popular one. I was greeted by CP publisher Don Farley and his lovely wife Maggie upon entering. My pal Jen Marsh, CP’s advertising director came over immediately and introduced me to staffer Donald Ely, who’s produced some cool illustrations for Style in the past year. I caught up with Sun restaurant reviewer Richard Gorelick to get the skinny on what’s going on there now that veteran critic Elizabeth Large has retired. Of all the restaurants that were represented at the party, I can easily say the tastiest thing I had all night was the thin-crust pizza from Bagby Pizza Co. in Harbor East. I had to return for seconds on that one. The mini burgers from Kooper’s Chow Hound were a close second. My friend Lars Rusins of Baltimore Foodies had a table there, manned by Foodies Neil & Deni Tabor. Ran into lots of other friends and acquaintances in the course of the evening: John Marsh & Michelle Geczy, photographer John Davis, Dru Bynum & Jamie Campbell, J.M. Giordano, Everyman Theatre’s David Alima, Bruce Alderman, and lots more. When the party was winding down, a few of us trekked up a few blocks to The Idle Hour for late-night cocktails and mingling.
