Gertrude Stein, one of the most important cultural figures of the 20th century, spent four years as a medical student at Johns Hopkins, a period in which she fell in love for the first time, fell out of favor at the medical school and had experiences that fueled her early books. Why doesn’t Baltimore claim her among the ranks of artists who put this city on the map?
