When I was growing up, my family had little money, so my mom, an excellent cook, would entertain me and my brother with food, making us special treats on holidays or weekends. This is where my appreciation for well-made, tasty food started.
I’ve prepared for you the recipes that my brother and I would most often request of my mother. They’re easy-to-make comfort foods with unique flavors that you’ve not likely tasted before. I still enjoy preparing—and eating—these specialties today, serving the Swedish poppy seed bread every Christmas morning, the pizza for family meals at the inn, and the maraschino cherry bars for my daughter Gabby, her favorite treat.
